Fethiye Municipality has opened the Animal Shelter, which it renovated following the changes made to Animal Protection Law No. 5199. Veterinary Affairs Director Ahmet Demir said that the facility, redesigned with a focus on adoption, has become one of the exemplary shelters in Turkey with its modern equipment.
Fethiye Municipality has put into service the Animal Shelter and Rehabilitation Center that it renewed to ensure the care of street animals under healthier and safer conditions. After the completion of the renovation works carried out for about one and a half years, the facility started its activities with modern equipment and new living spaces.
Fethiye Municipality Veterinary Affairs Director Ahmet Demir provided information about the work carried out, stating that after the amendments to the Animal Protection Law No. 5199, the shelter was replanned to meet the needs. Demir said, "We have been carrying out extensive renovations at our shelter for about one and a half years. With the changes in the law, especially since dogs must stay in shelters until they are adopted, it became mandatory to reorganize our existing spaces."
Demir, stating that Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca attaches great importance to the project, said that new living spaces suitable for the needs of dogs and cats were created accordingly. Demir said that adoption, socialization, and rehabilitation areas were established within the scope of the renewal, "Our goal is not only to provide care for the animals but also to reunite them with their new homes. Therefore, adoption is one of our most important priorities. The more beloved friends we can unite with a warm home, the happier we are," he said.
Demir, stating that new sections were created considering the physical and behavioral needs of the animals, expressed that each area was planned appropriately for its intended use. Emphasizing that they have also established an important infrastructure in veterinary services, Demir said, "We renewed our veterinary equipment used in our clinic with modern devices. By providing all the technical equipment needed during examination, treatment, and rehabilitation processes, we have increased our service quality."
Demir stated that the living conditions of the animals staying in the care home have also been improved, that automatic water and feeding systems have been installed in the open living areas, and that all arrangements have been planned to enhance animal welfare. Emphasizing that the renovated facility has become an exemplary center both in its physical structure and service approach, Demir added that as the Fethiye Municipality, they will continue to improve the quality of life of street animals and strengthen adoption efforts.

With the new regulation published in the Official Gazette, significant changes have been made to the norm staff system of municipalities. The regulation covering municipalities across Turkey also closely concerns the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and its affiliated institutions. Director positions exceeding the norm staffing standards will be frozen, and when they become vacant, they will not be refilled and will be canceled by the decision of the municipal council.
