The climate cycle starting in the Pacific Ocean will cause temperatures well above seasonal norms and extreme natural events across the region. Following heat waves exceeding 40 degrees in coastal districts, flood risks are predicted in the winter months.
According to the World Meteorological Organization and NOAA data, the new atmospheric movement affecting the global atmosphere is preparing southwestern Turkey for a serious test. From the last days of July onward, the effects of ocean-related warming will reach the geography.
THE FIRST WAVE WILL AFFECT THE COASTS AT THE END OF SUMMER
Throughout the region, temperatures will rise above seasonal norms with the end of July. Especially in coastal settlements like Bodrum, Marmaris, and Fethiye, localized heat waves will form. Thermometers are expected to break the 40-degree barrier. Daily temperature values will hover about 2 degrees above the overall averages.
THE MAIN CHANGE BEGINS IN AUTUMN
Computations by climate scientist Prof. Dr. Levent Kurnaz and meteorology experts show that the fundamental change in the Mediterranean Basin will become pronounced with September. Normally expected to cool down, the air will rise far above normal levels in autumn due to the Super El Nino cycle. The situation is worsening. Precipitation will be delayed and remain significantly below expected levels.
FIRE RISK WILL EXTEND UNTIL NOVEMBER
The fire danger in forests, which usually decreases in September, will remain high until the end of autumn due to excessive temperatures. Dry periods weaken the plant cover on the ground. The sudden drop of relative humidity to around 20 percent increases the threat in rural areas.
TORNADO AND FLOOD THREATS IN WINTER
El Nino, reaching its global peak in December, will carry the sea surface warming to a completely different dimension in winter months. The excess water vapor accumulated in the atmosphere will produce destructive weather events during sudden cold front shifts. Tornadoes may form over the sea off Gökova Gulf and Fethiye. Sudden downpours will increase in coastal areas. The warming cycle will continue with record values throughout 2027.
