Silk Farming is Reviving in Muğla

Silk farming is reviving in Muğla. The first live cocoon harvest in the project supported by the Metropolitan Municipality was completed in Yerkesik.

With the support of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality to producers, silk farming is becoming widespread again in the city. Within the scope of the Silk Farming Improvement and Development Project, live cocoon harvests have started, and the first harvest was completed at S.S. Yerkesik Agricultural Development Cooperative.

Equipment support is provided to producers

The project implemented by the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Agricultural Services Department has become an important production area for the revival of silk farming throughout the province. Within the scope of the project, silk worm rearing tents, establishment of mulberry gardens, provision of drying beds, and necessary equipment during the production process are provided to producers free of charge.

The first harvest was completed in Yerkesik

As live cocoon harvests have begun throughout the province, the first harvest was completed at S.S. Yerkesik Agricultural Development Cooperative. Producers stated that with the provided support, they have the opportunity to produce under more efficient, hygienic, and modern conditions.

Producer Hamdiye Kanal, who said they completed the harvest period, said, "We collected our cocoons. We thank Muğla Metropolitan Municipality for the support provided to us throughout the process."

"We produce under modern and easy conditions"

Producer Güler Özsu, who said she had done silk farming in the past, noted that production was done with more limited means before. Expressing that production has become easier with the support provided, Özsu said, "We used to do this business with more limited means. At that time, production was laborious. Now, thanks to the support provided, we can produce under modern, hygienic, and easy conditions."

"We successfully completed our first trial"

Feyzullah Ören, Chairman of the Board of S.S. Yerkesik Agricultural Development Cooperative, stated that they started silk farming with the support of the Metropolitan Municipality and successfully completed the production process. Ören said, "A production tent of about 100 square meters was set up and all necessary equipment was provided. I thank our Mayor Ahmet for the support. After about a 45-day marathon, we successfully completed our first trial. This season, we expect to obtain between 80 and 100 kilograms of live cocoon. We continue our work in cooperation with the Agricultural Services Department."

Ahmet Aras, President of the Coastal Municipalities Union and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, stated that silk farming is an important part of Muğla's cultural heritage and said they will continue to support rural development.

President Aras said, "We are not only supporting production but also aiming to create new income sources for our citizens living in rural areas. Silk farming is an important activity that both preserves our cultural heritage and produces economic value. The interest shown by our producers and the successful results obtained demonstrate that there is significant potential in this area with the right support. I thank all our citizens producing all over Muğla, and I wish their efforts to be fruitful. We will resolutely continue to grow a producing Muğla together, strengthen rural development, and support local production."
