New Measures Against Extreme Heat in Muğla

The Muğla Provincial Public Hygiene Council has implemented new measures to reduce the adverse effects of rising temperatures on public health. In a meeting chaired by Muğla Governor Dr. İdris Akbıyık, comprehensive decisions particularly covering chronic patients, elderly, children, pregnant women, disabled people, and outdoor workers were unanimously approved.

Working conditions during extreme heat will be re-evaluated

According to the Ministry of Health's "Update on the Effects of Extreme Heat on Health and Necessary Precautions" circular, working conditions of public employees will be re-evaluated on days when heat waves are effective. Initially, administrative measures will be applied if necessary for those with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, disabled people, and pregnant women. If air temperatures seriously affect life, work arrangements may also be made for other public officials, and administrative leave can be implemented with the decision of the Public Hygiene Council.

Protective services for risk groups will be increased

Within the scope of the decisions, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality will work in coordination with the Provincial Health Directorate and the Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services. Protective health services for citizens in risk groups will be strengthened, and information and awareness activities will be expanded. If needed, cooling areas accessible to citizens will be established and social support services activated. Additionally, informative content prepared with expert support on ways to protect from the sun will be shared publicly through TV, radio, newspapers, and social media.

Meteorological warnings will be closely monitored

According to the Council's decision, the basis of the heat-health action plans will be the early warning system. Data from the General Directorate of Meteorology and the Ministry of Health's perceived temperature calculations will be jointly evaluated. UV index will also be considered during extreme heat periods. Meteorology Station Directorate and municipalities will make additional warnings to the public about sun protection.

Preparation levels in infrastructure and health services will be raised

Instructions have been given to relevant institutions to take necessary measures to prevent disruptions in electricity, water, sewage, transportation, fire department, and food services caused by heat waves. Municipalities, electricity distribution companies, and relevant public institutions will increase preparations for uninterrupted critical services. Meanwhile, readiness levels against heat-related health problems will be raised in all public and private health institutions across the province. In-service training will be provided to health personnel, and risk group citizens will be informed about sufficient fluid intake, proper nutrition, and protection methods against heatstroke.

The Muğla Provincial Public Hygiene Council unanimously decided that all measures taken will be implemented under the coordination of relevant institutions.
