Muğla Metropolitan Municipality elected as member of the World Council for the 2026-2029 term
Muğla Metropolitan Municipality was elected as a member of the World Council for the 2026-2029 term by the decision taken at the World Union of Local Authorities (UCLG) General Assembly. Thus, Muğla will be represented in international decision-making mechanisms alongside leading cities worldwide such as Madrid, Rome, Barcelona, Vancouver, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Jakarta, and Seoul.
Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has achieved another significant success by strengthening its representation internationally. By the decision taken at the World Union of Local Authorities (UCLG) General Assembly, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality was elected as a member of the World Council for the 2026-2029 term.
The membership, finalized within the scope of the UCLG World Congress held in Tangier, Morocco, will enable Muğla to have a say in decision-making mechanisms where local governments from different geographic regions of the world are represented. This membership will also increase Muğla's visibility and effectiveness in international local government networks.
Mayor Aras Spoke at the Climate Summit in Tangier
Participating in the UCLG World Congress, Chairman of the Coastal Municipalities Union and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras spoke at the session titled "COP31: Positioning of Mediterranean Cities and Regions" as the Chair of the UCLG MEWA Culture and Tourism Committee.
Mayor Aras stated that Muğla, with its 1,500-kilometer coastline, rich biodiversity, and an economy based on tourism and agriculture, is one of the cities directly experiencing the effects of the climate crisis, emphasizing that combating climate change is possible through international and regional cooperation.

Mayor Aras stated that they position Muğla as a city opening to the world from the Mediterranean with its nature, culture, tourism, and agricultural production,
“In line with our goal of making Muğla a World City, we will continue to strengthen international collaborations, increase the city’s resilience to climate, and make our local values visible on a global scale.”
Mayor Aras also noted that the COP31 process, for which Turkey is a candidate host, presents important opportunities for both Muğla and the world, drawing attention to the importance of strong cooperation on fossil fuel exit and fair transformation issues.
With the World Council membership, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality will contribute to shaping local government policies on a global scale and further enhance the city’s representation power on international platforms.
