Muğla Metropolitan Municipality is expanding Smart Transportation Systems investments to make traffic more fluid citywide. The dynamic intersection application, activated at 16 intersections by the Transportation Department, monitors vehicle density with real-time data. Loop detectors under the asphalt and smart cameras automatically adjust signal durations according to traffic conditions. Early results show vehicle queues decreased by up to 83% at some points. The system now stands out as a new model showing how Muğla will manage transportation under increasing population and tourism pressure.

Muğla smart transportation system operates with a different structure than classic time-controlled traffic lights. Cameras placed at intersections and loop detectors positioned under asphalt continuously monitor vehicle density. This data is transferred to the signaling system. The system gives a longer green light phase in the direction with higher density.

Thus, unnecessary time allocation to empty directions is prevented. Traffic flow is rearranged according to variable density during the day. This flexible structure is especially important for increased vehicle movement during commute hours, school dismissals, and tourism seasons. Metropolitan Municipality aims with this application to both reduce waiting time and ensure a more balanced traffic flow at intersections.

President of the Coastal Municipalities Union and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Ahmet Aras stated that innovative solutions are needed in transportation due to the city's growing population, developing tourism potential, and increasing vehicle density. Aras said they implemented applications that facilitate citizens' daily lives with the opportunities provided by technology.

According to Mayor Aras, the goal is to spread a contemporary, environmentally friendly, and sustainable transportation understanding across all districts of Muğla. This approach focuses not only on alleviating today’s traffic problems but also on preparing for increased transportation demand in the coming years.
