The suspect who caused the fire in Marmaris turned out to be a municipal worker!
In the investigation conducted regarding the forest fire that broke out at midnight in the Asparan area of Marmaris and was extinguished before spreading by the teams, it was determined that the person responsible for the fire was a worker at the Marmaris municipality. It was learned that the suspect caught as a result of witness statements and security camera examinations confessed in his statement that the fire started from a cigarette butt.
On July 30, 2026, at around midnight, a fire broke out in the forested area of Asparan Location in İçmeler Neighborhood, Marmaris district of Muğla. Following the fire report, gendarmerie, fire brigade, and related institution teams were quickly dispatched to the scene. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the teams, the flames were brought under control and extinguished before they could spread.
The teams started working to determine the cause of the fire and took the statements of two witnesses who made the first report. The witnesses described that a motorcyclist quickly left the scene towards İçmeler when the fire started.
Subsequently, the teams examined the security cameras in the area and identified the license plate and route of the motorcycle. As a result of the studies, it was determined that the motorcycle driver was H.İ.Ş. The suspect was caught at his residence at around 6:00 PM on the same day by police teams and taken into custody.
In his initial statement, H.İ.Ş. said that he was riding his motorcycle from Osmaniye Neighborhood towards the district center on the night of the incident. He explained that he stopped to rest in the Asparan area and smoked a cigarette. The suspect stated that he thought he had extinguished his cigarette, but just as he was about to leave, he saw that the cigarette butt, affected by the wind, ignited dry grass; he panicked and left the scene.
It was learned that the suspect worked as a cleaning staff member at Marmaris Municipality.
The investigation regarding the incident is ongoing by the Marmaris District Gendarmerie Command, while the suspect caught by the police teams was handed over to the gendarmerie teams for completion of legal proceedings.
