Legal action against suspect who threw cigarette butt from vehicle into forest in Marmaris

Legal action has been initiated against a suspect who was identified as throwing a burning cigarette butt from a moving vehicle into a forested area in Marmaris district of Muğla. The insensitive driver was caught after persistent efforts by Marmaris Forest and Gendarmerie teams.

Following the images shared on social media, the Marmaris Forest Management Directorate and the Marmaris District Gendarmerie Command teams, under the instruction of the Marmaris Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, started an operation. After reviewing security camera footage following social media posts, S.G., born in 1999, was identified and caught quickly for throwing a burning cigarette butt from a moving vehicle into a forested area on Orhaniye Neighborhood road.

A crime report was drawn up against the suspect under Article 76 of Law No. 6831 on Forests, and legal proceedings were initiated. According to the relevant provision of the law, those who throw unextinguished cigarettes or materials that could indirectly cause fires in forests face imprisonment from 1 to 3 years and judicial fines.

Officials from the forest management directorate emphasized the increased risk of fires during the summer months and stated that inspections against behaviors that could cause forest fires will be continued steadfastly. Citizens are also requested to report similar situations to the relevant authorities if encountered.
