Bad news from the Supreme Court for coffeehouse regulars
The Supreme Court 2nd Civil Chamber, evaluating an appeal in a divorce case, found the husband who constantly neglects his home by spending time with friends at the coffeehouse seriously at fault. Highlighting that leaving the wife alone in social settings and on special occasions while constantly spending time at the coffeehouse leads to fundamental disruption of family unity, the high court ruled that the husband, considered seriously at fault, must pay compensation to the wife.
Especially bad news from the Supreme Court for regulars who head to the coffeehouse in the early hours on their days off. A couple experiencing financial difficulties for some time applied to the Family Court and filed a mutual divorce case.
The plaintiff's counter-defendant wife alleged that he constantly forced her to go to her mother's house, used violence when she did not want to go, seriously neglected his home by constantly spending time with friends at the coffeehouse, and did not meet any of the household needs.
The plaintiff woman stated that she covered the electricity, natural gas, clothing, and out-of-town travel expenses herself and reported her husband saying, 'If you didn't have a salary, I wouldn't have married you.' She claimed to have been subjected to insults throughout the marriage, to psychological violence including comments like 'bald, man-legged, how did I get this ugly one, was I blind?' due to her constant hair loss.
They requested the case to be accepted, the parties to be divorced, and for material and moral compensation of 50,000 TL each to be awarded. While residents of Bursa viewed the decision with differing opinions, it was reminded that the Supreme Court's ruling will set a precedent for future decisions.
