The 187th Anniversary of the Gendarmerie was celebrated with a ceremony in Muğla

In Muğla, a wreath-laying program was held as part of the 187th Anniversary of the General Command of the Gendarmerie. During the ceremony, the history and achievements of the organization with a deep-rooted past were proudly commemorated.

The 187th Anniversary of the General Command of the Gendarmerie was celebrated with an official ceremony in Muğla. As part of the program, Muğla Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Brigadier General Adem Şen laid a wreath at the Atatürk Bust. After a moment of silence and the singing of the National Anthem, Gendarmerie Lieutenant Halil İbrahim İzgi gave a speech detailing the history of the General Command of the Gendarmerie.

Lieutenant Halil İbrahim İzgi, in his speech, drew attention to the historical process of the Turkish Gendarmerie organization and stated: "Within the victorious history of the Turkish Army dating back to 209 B.C., although not called Gendarmerie, services aimed at maintaining security and public order have been carried out by specialized military-law enforcement officers known as yargan, subaşı, and zaptiye."

Touching on the official founding process of the organization, İzgi recalled that with the announcement of the Tanzimat Edict on November 3, 1839, the duty to protect the life and property security of the public was given to officers under the command of governors. By combining the year of the Tanzimat Edict’s announcement with June 14, the date when the Asakir-i Zaptiye Regulation (Military Law Enforcement Regulation) came into effect, June 14, 1839, has been accepted as the official founding date of the Gendarmerie.
