A tradition unchanged for 30 years in Fethiye: ‘Akansoy Festival’

The 30th Akansoy Festival held this year in the Cebeci location of Nif Neighborhood in the district of Fethiye brought together family members living in different cities and districts of Turkey. This tradition, sustained for about thirty years, continues to keep the spirit of unity and solidarity alive while strengthening the cooperation between generations. Started in 1996 under the leadership of Şaban Zihni Avcı, the Akansoy Festival has over the years gone beyond being just a family gathering, becoming a symbol of shared culture, kinship bonds, and solidarity.

The organization, held every year on the last Sunday of July, was held this year with intense participation.
The festival, which started in the morning hours, featured music performances, local treats, games for children and adults, and various activities closely connected with nature throughout the day. Family members coming from different cities reunited after a long time, while children had fun with traditional games.

A different family hosts each year

One of the most important traditions of the Akansoy Festival is that the organization is undertaken every year by a different elder family member within the family. The host family voluntarily prepares meals, sherbet, and other treats, welcoming all guests. Thus, the responsibility of the organization is shared collectively, and the culture of solidarity within the family is maintained.

Traditional dishes, sherbet, and various treats were offered to participants throughout the day, while family members conversed and reminisced about old days accompanied by music. The play areas and activities prepared for children added color to the festival.

Three generations met at the same table

One of the most meaningful moments of the festival was when the oldest and youngest members of the family gathered at the same table. Among the eldest members of the family were 95-year-old Belizar Avcı and Hilmi Avcı, along with 93-year-old Durmuş Ali Avcı, who participated in the event as living memories of the festival. The gathering of elders with younger generations once again highlighted the aspect of the Akansoy Festival that strengthens the bond between generations. The family members organizing the event emphasized that the Akansoy Festival is not merely a picnic or entertainment event but an important heritage that preserves family culture and shared values. The family elders stated that they aim for this tradition, sustained for 30 years, to continue with the same unity and togetherness understanding by future generations.
