Countdown started for Fethiye Bay! Bottom cleaning starts in August
An important step was reached in the long-awaited process for Fethiye Bay, which has been on the agenda for years due to pollution and bottom sludge. Following the meeting of AK Party Muğla Provincial Chairman Cengizhan Güngör and Deputies Kadem Mete and Yakup Otgöz with the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum, it was announced that bottom cleaning works will start in August.
FETHIYE BAY SUMMIT AT THE MINISTRY
AK Party Muğla Provincial Chairman Cengizhan Güngör and AK Party Muğla Deputies Kadem Mete and Yakup Otgöz visited Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum and General Director of Nature Conservation Hacı Abdullah Uçan.
In the meeting, marine pollution and bottom sludge cleaning works, which have long been on the public agenda in Fethiye Bay, were discussed.
16 MILLION CUBIC METERS OF BOTTOM SLUDGE DETECTED
According to the statement, the feasibility studies conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change have been updated.
After the scientific studies initiated in 2018, the current status of the Bay was re-evaluated with new bathymetry, shallow seismic measurements, drillings, and chemical analyses conducted in 2025.
As a result of the studies, it was determined that approximately 16 million cubic meters of bottom sludge had accumulated in Fethiye Bay.
It was stated that sediment accumulation especially at the mouth of Murt Stream negatively affects marine transportation.
THE SHIP BROUGHT FROM CHINA IS READY
According to the statement, the special ship to be used for bottom cleaning was brought dismantled from China to Mersin Port.
It was reported that the ship, whose assembly operations have been completed, will come to Fethiye Bay in August and start the first analysis works.
Following the analyses, the bottom sludge cleaning phase will begin.
THE AIM IS TO RESTORE THE BAY TO ITS FORMER DAYS
AK Party Muğla Provincial Chairman Cengizhan Güngör and Deputies Kadem Mete and Yakup Otgöz stated that the process is being closely monitored to restore the healthy structure of Fethiye Bay.
In the statement, thanks were given to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum, and ministry bureaucrats for their support.

Work will be carried out in an area of approximately 600 hectares.
16 million cubic meters of bottom sludge will be cleaned.
A special ship brought from China will be operational.
