World Bicycle Day Event Held in Fethiye: District Governor Akkaya's Call for Bicycling

Before the event starting at Beşkaza Square, District Governor Akkaya made statements, saying that the bicycle is not only a sports vehicle but also a way of life. Emphasizing the bicycle's significant contributions to the environment, health, and urban life, Akkaya said, "The bicycle is one of the first vehicles that come to mind when we talk about climate, environment, and sustainable living. However, we should not view the bicycle only as a sport. The bicycle is also a lifestyle. You are both exercising, managing your transportation, and reducing your carbon footprint."

“Fethiye is a City Very Suitable for Bicycle Use”

Expressing that Fethiye is a city suitable for bicycle use with its natural structure, Akkaya called on citizens to prefer bicycles in their daily lives.

Akkaya said, "Fethiye is a city extremely suitable for cycling with its coast, promenade, forests, mountains, and natural beauties. Unless we have very urgent matters, we should prefer bicycles over motorcycles. We can go to the bakery, market, bazaar, or visit friends by bicycle. This city is suitable for that."

“Bicycle Culture Should Become Widespread”

Akkaya, emphasizing that bicycle culture has developed around the world as a result of long years of efforts, stated that all institutions and citizens have responsibilities in establishing this culture in Fethiye as well. Pointing out that the use of bicycles will reduce city traffic and noise pollution, Akkaya said, "The example of the Netherlands is often given, but this did not happen in a day. Important responsibilities fall on local governments, public institutions, tradesmen, and citizens. With willpower, implementation, and patience, we can make the bicycle culture stronger in Fethiye."
