Healing hidden in Fethiye's maquis: Myrtle plant attracts attention in July

With the onset of summer season, myrtle (Myrtus communis), one of the characteristic species of Mediterranean maquis, has started to attract attention in nature. The plant, which naturally grows on the district's slopes near the coast, in the clearings of red pine forests and maquis areas, contributes to the region's biological richness with its fragrant leaves and white flowers. Commonly known as “murt” and “hambeles” among the people, myrtle is an evergreen member of the Myrtaceae family. The plant, usually growing as a shrub between 1 and 3 meters tall, is known for its leaves, fruits, and essential oil, which have been traditionally used for many years.

Scientific studies indicate that the leaves and fruits of the myrtle plant have a content rich in phenolic compounds and essential oils, containing numerous aromatic components, primarily 1,8-cineole, alpha-pinene, myrtenyl acetate, and limonene. Thanks to these characteristics, the plant is considered one of the important medicinal and aromatic species evaluated in phytotherapy, natural cosmetics, food, and essential oil industries. Studies conducted by experts reveal that the myrtle plant continues to be the subject of scientific research due to its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, while it is stated that the sustainable conservation of this species, which naturally grows in Turkey's rich Mediterranean flora, is important for biological diversity.

The myrtle plant, which nature lovers can frequently encounter in Fethiye in July, is also among the most striking species of the region's natural vegetation with its purple-black or white fruits that ripen towards the end of summer.
